Nikon Z7II with the NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.8 S lens
I have used the Nikon Z7II as my primary studio camera body for many years. Why? It’s the only Nikon Z camera that has a perfect DXO Sensor score of 100, surpassing the Z8 (although not by much). In studio work, I want the very best results and the Z7II always delivers. I never use subject detection auto focus so any Z7II AF deficiencies aren’t really a factor for me. I still use the old fashion focus on the eyes and recompose method. I would never rely on subject detection AF when working on paid assignments such as business portraits, it’s just too risky.

That doesn’t mean that there isn’t room for an improved and updated Z7II. With a release date of October 2020, the Z7II offers plenty of opportunity for updates and changes, much of which are overdue. And with the release of the Z6III, Nikon is signalling that it will iterate all of their current Z numbered cameras, including the Z7II. I think similar changes could be made to the Z7II to bring it up to date and create a Z7III as they did with the recent Z6III.

Here is what I think the specs of a refreshed Nikon Z7II could be (for stills photography):
Partially stacked CMOS sensor using the new 61MP SONY sensor.
EXPEED 7 Imaging processor
12 FPS full 14 bit RAW files with no qualifiers or compromises.
Higher resolution viewfinder, same one that is in the Z6III
Same battery as the current Z7II
Improved AF, similar to the Z6III.
Built in content authentication
High resolution Pixel Shift
Fully articulating rear screen, like on the Z6III
Similar body size and shape of the Z6III
Max native ISO increased to 51,200 from 25,600
Voice memo
Increased shutter speed to 1/1600 like on the Z6III
JPEG Pre-capture
There you have it, what I think will be the major specs of the Z7III.

The Z7 series was the high resolution go to when the Z system launched. In keeping with it’s same position within the lineup, I think we are going to have to see a jump in the sensor megapixels. That’s why I see it using the new 61MP SONY sensor. This will once again place the ZIII in it’s traditional roll as the king of Nikon cameras when it comes to detail and image quality.
How would it price such a camera without intruding on the sales and success of the Z6III and Z8 cameras. Considering the current price of the Z6III is $2,199.95 and the Z8 is $3,399.95, I think a launch price of $2,699.95 would fit nicely between the Z6III and the Z8 and provide enough differentiation in specs and price to offer a genuine choice to be considered without much overlap with the other competing models in Nikon’s Z camera body lineup.

As for an estimated release date, I would say sometime later during this calendar year, possibly near the holidays in December.
Let me know in the comments section below what you think the Z7III may offer in improvements and when it might be released (no sign-in required to leave a comment).
Within a few days of taking delivery of the complete professional f/2.8 zoom trio, Nikon announced the new NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II, replacing the original NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S lens I had just purchased. For now, I’m staying with the original 24-70 f/2.8 Z lens for now, mostly due to the price difference. Once the novelty wares off and the price comes down on the new version, I’m sure I will eventually purchase the II version and sell the original one.
